I love a good story, and sometimes I can enjoy a bad one too. Movies are a big portion of how I ingest them. I’ll watch it all, whether it’s B-Horror Flick from the 50’s (The Monster from Piedras Blancas), a film noir from the 40’s (Laura), a straight up comedy (Idiocracy), a rom-com (27 Dresses), crime thriller (In the Heat of the Night), drama (Darkest Hour), action (Die Another Day) or fantasy (Lord of the Rings). I will give it all a turn. Regarding old movies, it has been interesting to see the culture it captures. They are now a snapshot for our views during a certain time period and how we have evolved or devolved. I will definitely revisit this idea in later posts
Lately, the fascination is with the superhero movie. I admit it, I am hooked. If I
could have a superpower, it would be super speed. The Flash and Quicksilver are my guys. Probably because I’ve always wished these skinny legs could go faster. Besides, for the first post I wanted to start out with something fun. Even though there are plenty of serious issues to be discussed, I find it’s best not to take oneself too seriously.
What could be more fun than the comic universe! It is a genre I have recently been introduced to and come to appreciate, but I am quite far from being an expert. Although, I am proud to say that I was encouraged and enabled to read the JLA/Avengers crossover comic.
Currently, everyone is making or has made their plans for the latest cinematic comic version from Marvel. The final and main feast of Marvel’s Endgame. Captain Marvel came out in March as the appetizer. When her signal showed up in the teaser at the end of Infinity War, I chomped on the bait. Whose signal is that? This is going to be huge! But, when I settled in my morning seat, I was about to get an education. My fledgling knowledge exposed.
It appears, that Captain Marvel was not a central character in the Marvel Universe. She was a peripheral character, less interesting than the others. Not a fan favorite. Marvel has reimagined Captain Marvel to be this all powerful superhero comparable to DC’s Superman, The Superhero of all Superheros. Even when I read the JLA/Crossover comic, it was Thor, not Captain Marvel they considered to be Superman’s equal. Captain Marvel didn’t even make an appearance in that comic. So, he was not impressed. After I thought about it. I let him know. I can’t wait for Captain Marvel! She is going to be awesome and put Thanos in his place.
I was still excited and would not be deterred. First, it’s about a woman who kicks-ass. Always fun to watch and there happened to be a couple of women who did. Secondly, When it has come to the movies and reimagining the comic book characters for the big screen, Marvel has been aces in the casting and execution. As loved as the characters are, DC films have mostly struggled (Marvel vs DC will be a later post). As I have seen some trailers for Endgame, I’ve had one question. Where is the Flerkin? Those were the scenes that elicited a response with a laugh as adorable, snuggly cat transforms into monster to decimate the bad guys. Then I wondered, was Captain Marvel upstaged by a cat/Flerkin?
As people are now pouring in to see Marvel: Endgame, what I am curious to know is: What do you think of Captain Marvel as the next big thing in the Superhero world? If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I would be a genie so I could grant everyone 3 wishes.
Thanks for your response!! That would be a good superpower!! Very conscientious.
I’ve never liked superheroes. I didn’t read comic books as a kid and I was never interested in watching the movies. I think the first Superman movie came out in 1980. I was a sophomore in high school and working at Baskin-Robbins in the mall. The multi-plex movie theater was also in the mall, and we would be slammed when the movies ended. I remember people talking about how great Superman was, but I just didn’t get why? The whole premise of Superman seemed dumb.
To start with, Lois Lane couldn’t tell the difference between Clark Kent and Superman? She was honestly THAT confused by his glasses! And in 1980, Superman seemed so old-fashioned. He was something that my father had mentioned listening to on the radio as a kid, and could understand the appeal to a young boy when America was at war with the Nazis. A kid needed something wholesome to believe, and trusting that a good guy was watching over you made sense to me. I understood how Superman might have been relevant 40 years earlier. But in 1980 I was 15 years old and Superman was as irrelevant to me as victory gardens and war bonds.
Now it’s 40 years later and I still have absolutely no interest in superheroes. I think it’s because I’m a Gen-X. I was the first generation of the latchkey kids, and had little to no adult supervision growing up. The idea that anyone was watching over me, let alone going to help me get out of trouble, is laughable! All that time spent alone as a child has made me fierce independent. I don’t need a guy with a cape to help me! I don’t need anyone, damn it! So, I still can’t imagine wanting to watch a superhero movie.
Having said all that, I had shoulder surgery a couple of years ago and had some extended downtime. I was watching a lot of TV and I ran across a show called The Awesomes. The Awesomes is an American adult animated comedy series created by Seth Meyers from Saturday Night Live!
The premise of the cartoon is a rag-tag team of semi-superheroes, with less than amazing superpowers, who take on some bad guys. One “superhero” is Concierge, and her superpower is to rapidly perceive people’s needs, organize information, and optimize resources! Concierge can stop crime with an organized day planner! That’s someone who can REALLY help.
Thanks, but no thanks, Superman. You can keep your fancy cape and leaping over tall buildings. I’m sticking with Concierge and her ability to create email filters.
I appreciate your response!! Good to hear from someone on the other side. I will have to look for The Awesomes.
I like your graphics!! I’m a super hero fan as well and have loved all the Marvel movies. Saw Endgame the day it opened and will see it again soon. I hope they do more with Captain Marvel in the future but if they do I hope they make her personality a bit more dynamic. When I was a teenager I said my desired super power would be invisibility. Then I could sneak into the girls locker room and get a better view than those Porky’s boys! Now, as a middle aged guy I think I’d go for the billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist. Unfortunately, I suppose I’ll have to settle for my incredible, super human ability of being able to watch Marvel movies ad infinitum!!
Thank you for responding!! I can definitely join you in the watching Marvel movies superpower. Haha!!
I haven’t kept up to date with any of the Marvel movies, so I don’t have an educated opinion.
The super power I would have is to refill anything! From a glass of water to my bank account 😉
If I have to go with traditional powers, I would probably have to say being able to fly. Would get to see the world from up above and not have a car payment haha.
My trail crew superpower (we have had discussions at Rocky about this) would be to have laser vision. That way I don’t ever have to use a chainsaw, I just fell trees with my eyes!
Love you and love this post!! Can’t wait to see the next topic!!
Glad to have you respond!! Those would all be great superpowers. Give the Rocky Trail Crew a shout out. You guys are doing great work!! Hope to hear more from you.
